Bible study is the real refuge

With Bible study materials and the teaching of Bible League-trained pastor, a refugee in Kenya learns that refuge in Jesus is eternal

Bible study materials were certainly not among the things Zukiah took with him when he fled his home country of Congo. Zukiah remembers his struggle on foot—surviving, thanks to good Samaritans and their charity—while traveling a month’s time to reach the Nairobi refugee camps.

"I left Congo a very bitter man," Zukiah says. "Although I believed that there was a God, I could not believe He was love."

As a refugee in another country, Zukiah stayed among other Congolese that escaped into Kenya to find safety in the slums of northern Nairobi.

A burden to reach them

One fellow refugee he met, named Sefu, was a pastor. He often hosted a Bible study in the camp using our materials. Sefu had a burden to reach his fellow countrymen for Christ and invited Zukiah to change his mind about God by learning from the Bible.

At Zukiah's first meeting with the group, he felt the peace of God settle his heart. "I met other Congolese who had gone through similar experiences or even worse," he says. "I continued to attend the Bible study every week and began attending the Sunday service, too.

He suffered so that I may live

"I became convicted. These lessons on God's love, revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and his suffering, revolutionized my understanding of who God is," Zukiah adds. “I couldn’t believe he suffered so that I may live.”

Today, Zukiah still lives as a refugee. "I am living a peaceful life," he says. "My heart and mind have been healed and I love the Lord with a true love.  My prayer is that God will use me to help many know the love of God as it has been revealed to me. I know there is a reason why I was not killed that day. I want to do as my loving God commissions—go into all the world and preach the Gospel."

God is at work

God is working mightily through our Bible League International ministry in Kenya. Please pray for the Gospel to spread throughout the country and that our Bible study materials and evangelism training will change men’s hearts and bring peace to this devastated, war-torn land.
