North African Christian saves a baby’s life
Kira and her husband were blessed with five daughters. But like other North African women, Kira knew that her husband might decide to marry another wife to father at least one boy. It was during this time in Kira’s life that she also joined a Bible study group led by North African Christians who had been trained by the Bible League.
When Kira became pregnant again, she prayed with greater fervor that this sixth child would be a son. Since the Christians in her part of North Africa had shared the Word of God with her, Kira knew how Hannah had prayed for Samuel and she believed God would hear her prayers, as He had heard Hannah’s. Kira was convinced she would give birth to a boy.
But Kira’s anticipation ended in a broken heart when she delivered another daughter. She grew angry in her heart and refused to feed the baby. Then she decided to embark on a secret mission to end the child’s life, taking her to a pit where she intended to kill her. But on the way to the pit, Kira crossed paths with the North African Christian Bible study leader, who, seeing the crying child, asked her where she was going.
Kira declared that she was tired of baby girls and had decided to throw her into the pit. The Christian Bible study leader was not dissuaded, however, and stayed with Kira, counseling her. He had only one book in his hands at the time and he shared it with Kira. It was a lesson from the Word of God that taught against the killing of human beings.
Kira’s heart was softened by the kindness shown to her by this North African Christian man, and the Word of God he had shared with convicted her that the mission she has set out upon was wrong. She turned back toward home, taking the book with her.
Kira spent several days studying the Scriptures that the Christian Bible study leader in North Africa had given to her and as a result, she came to understand that her attitude and actions were in conflict with God’s will – both for her life and for the life of her newest daughter. Kira decided her need for a boy was like arguing with God.
Kira joined the other North African Christians in her village for church the next Sunday where she publicly repented of her sinful intentions to kill her daughter. The believers surrounded her with prayer as she asked for forgiveness and received Christ as her savior. Kira testifies: “The Word of God has power to heal broken hearts and show the way to peace.”
Throughout this part of the world, God is using Christians in North Africa to powerfully impact others for Christ. There is certainly no doubt that God used the Bible League-trained Christian man who intercepted Kira on her deadly mission to the pit that day, to literally save the life of Kira’s daughter, and Kira as well. It has been over two years since Kira gave her life to Christ and since then, she and her husband have welcomed a baby boy to their family. Armed with the Word of God, they now have hope for all their futures. Please join us in praying for them, and for other North African Christians like them.
