Divine Romance

An old woman who was in desperate need of spiritual transformation and love sits on the stairs of a local church near her home.

The search for love and romance is a pursuit that propels many people into unhealthy passions and obsessions. Irma, who grew up in Kyrgyzstan, was no exception. With no spiritual life whatsoever, she was a text book example of someone chasing the ‘bright elusive butterfly of love'.

"I lived for the desires of my flesh, and hungered for the next romantic relationship that might make my life complete," Irma confirmed. "Even after I married, it still didn't fill the void in my heart. I didn't know how to give love, only to receive, and my marriage failed."

"Life failed me and I felt cheated."

After her marriage ended, Irma lived in an obsessive cloud, constantly fixated on romance and desire, but never finding it. Irma began to feel physically ill as well. "I went to the doctor, and after some tests, I was told that I had cancer. The bottom fell out...life failed me and I felt cheated!"

At a follow up visit, Irma's doctor didn't mince any words. "He was straight to the point. ‘Your cancer is terminal so you had better make peace with God.' But I was anguished...I had no idea how to make peace with God."

A love for eternity

But Irma's doctor did. He was a Christian, and had been trained by Bible League International to lead Bible studies with patients and internists at the hospital. "He prayed for me right at my bedside; the next day the doctor read to me from the New Testament," Irma remembered.  "I took the Word of God and read it but my strength was failing me.  Time was short because my cancer was progressing.  The doctor visited me in the afternoon and read to me John 3:16-17 and I understood who Jesus Christ was and I prayed to receive Christ as my Savior."

Shortly after receiving Christ, Irma passed away. In her last moments on earth, she found the love that had eluded her for her whole life, a love that she will now celebrate and enjoy for the rest of eternity. As fine as that it, how much better would it have been for Irma to have met Jesus many years earlier? That opportunity exists for many Kyrgyz people.
