Bible dispels life’s dark shadows

Addicted to painkillers, unemployed, and often writhing in pain, Oyon was despised in her village in Mongolia. At one point in her life, she fought over scraps of food with stray dogs. Then one day someone approached her in the market . . .

"Dark shadows covered my life," says Oyon, a Mongolian woman whose twisted hip often left her writhing in pain. She finished school in hope of finding work. Instead, she found herself addicted to painkillers, unemployed, and an unmarried mother of two.

"My life was agonizing. At times I fought with stray dogs for scraps of food on the street. Because I was an invalid, no one would speak to me. I was rejected by all."

The light of Christ

Then a Christian trained by Bible League International approached her in the market one day. Oyon recalls, "‘Sister,' she said kindly, ‘may I speak with you?' She gave me a small booklet called Who is God? [one of Bible League's study booklets], and invited me to her church.

"This was the first time someone talked to me with such respect. I began meeting with this Christian, and she explained the Bible to me. Jesus freed me from my agonized life. He brought me into His light."

Bible enlightening a nation

About half of Mongolia's three million people are Buddhist. But God's Spirit is sweeping across this nation. Only four known Christians were in Mongolia in 1989; today they may number over 30,000. Bible League International's work is helping to ensure that God's growing Church takes firm root in His Word.
