KGB means "Keep Giving Bibles"
Michael was a card-carrying Communist Party Member thirty years ago. He was proud of his country and had a good career path in the military. It was Michael's ambition to become a KGB Agent. Life was good for him and his family in the USSR of the 1980’s. No one living at the same station as Michael would ever believe that Communism would one day collapse, and take its empty ideology with it. Of course God knew, and maybe that is why He called Michael when He did. Michael had no idea that one day he would be willing to lose everything for the cause of Christ.
There had been a legacy of Christianity in Michael's family; his grandfather had been a strong believer for 80 years. The rest of the family thought Grandpa was a strange old bird, but Michael respected the old man's convictions. The grandfather's Bible had been preserved, but Michael wasn't sure of which one of his relatives was keeping it. Since they were forbidden in Ukraine, Michael had a small degree of curiosity in what the Bible had to say. He didn't go asking around to see one; it wouldn't look good for a Party Member to be looking for a Bible.
Bibles in secret
One day, Michael was shocked to discover than another man he worked closely with, a fellow party member, had secretly become a Christian...and had a Bible. He could have easily turned this man in to the KGB; he would have been rewarded! But such was Michael's curiosity about Christianity, that he instead asked the man if he could see a Bible.
From that moment, events were sent into motion that resulted in Michael and his whole family coming to faith in Christ. Michael was invited to a Bible study at his friend's home, and being as secretive as he could, he went. It wasn't long at all that heart, prepared by the Holy Spirit, responded in Faith in Jesus Christ. Michael became a changed man! Rather than keeping his faith quiet, he risked himself by openly acknowledging that he was a Christian.
A new reputation
"It was a huge scandal!" Michael laughed as he told about those early days of faith. "They didn't know what to do with me. A former Communist military man becomes a Christian, and it is hurting their reputation. They sent some security service people to my home to question me about my faith. I was more than happy to tell them about Jesus!" He slapped his thigh and grinned. "They came back a few days later and told me I wasn't wanted in the military anymore. I was surprised that they didn't arrest me!"
Michael left the military a transformed man. "After that I wanted nothing more than to do God's work, and to tell others about His love. Even though it was dangerous during those days to speak about God, He used me to reach many others Communists, even military officers, for Christ. But I always remember that God doesn't save Communists, He saves sinners."
