God's Word brings hope following disaster
Ugandans seek spiritual recovery following floods and landslides

CHICAGO—”Our situation calls for serious prayer,” says Rev. Samuel Kabwana, our national director in Uganda. “We are asking for God’s intervention.” After days of heavy rains in eastern Uganda earlier this month, the Manafwa River swelled to three times its size and burst its banks in the Butaleja District at the foot of Mt. Elgon. Flooding submerged thousands of acres of crops, roads, schools, and housing. Heavy rains triggered massive landslides in some areas.

Those living in the Mt. Elgon region face the possibility of more flooding and landslides. More than 300 people were buried alive, and more than 300,000 people have been displaced by the floods and landslides. “We are making plans now to follow them with the Word of God wherever they settle. Landslides, mudslides, and floods have slowed our work in eastern, central, and western Uganda,” says Kabwana.

“Bible League International gives the people of Uganda hope in God,” says Silas Kenala, Senior Director of Africa Ministries. “During this crisis, we continue to share God’s Word with those who so desperately need to know Him and grow in their relationship with Him.”

Bible League International has been working with local churches throughout Uganda since 1980—providing Bibles; training Christians to lead Bible studies and share their faith; and helping them establish new churches where none existed before. In the past 20 years, more than 300,000 people have competed Bible studies; more than 140,000 believers have become part of a church; and more than 65,000 people have been trained to share God’s Word with others.

“Uganda’s government encourages churches to pray for God’s intervention, especially in times of catastrophes,” Kabwana says. “Bible League International continues to provide the Bibles, Bible study materials, and training they need.”
