CHICAGO—Bible League currently has ministry
in more than 60 countries. Last year, Bible League’s
U.S.-based staff designated a country to “adopt” during
2007. While supporting the Bible-sharing ministry worldwide,
they chose Latvia as a special funding project. In
a year long effort, giving sacrificially of their resources,
time, and talents, Bible League staff raised more than
$12,000—sending God’s Word into action
throughout Latvia.
Bordered by Estonia and Lithuania, Latvia is the central
of the three Baltic republics, and is home to more
than 2 million people. “The spiritual needs of
Latvians are great,” said Waldemar Kurz, Bible
League’s vice president of Eurasia ministries. “By
providing Bibles and training, Latvian Christians become
equipped to grow God’s family in number and in
spiritual maturity.”
Creative staff fundraisers included the sale of Latvian
pretzels, Christmas cards, knitted scarves, a bevy
of baked goods, purses, hand-crafted jewelry, and much
more. A cash cube was constructed for loose change,
and items were donated for a silent auction. Bible
League’s team of executive vice presidents orchestrated
an ice cream social, and the Administration department
organized a bean bag toss tournament and a burger bash.
All these events were for one purpose—to place
Bibles in Bible-less hands and bring people to Jesus
Christ.
“The fundraising efforts of Bible League
staff exemplifies their immense passion for the lost,” said
Becky Phillips, Bible League’s human resources
manager. “By opening their hearts to give, God
truly blessed their hard work and creativity. We are
already hearing testimonies of how people are coming
into fellowship with Christ and His Church in Latvia
as a result of the work of Bible League there. Praise
the Lord!”
In May, 2007, Latvians celebrated the 17-year anniversary
of Latvia’s Declaration of Independence from
the former U.S.S.R. And today, many Latvians who received
Bibles provided through these fundraising efforts celebrate
freedom in Jesus Christ. With the Lord’s provision
they truly will have a “Laimi’gu Jauno
Gaudu!” (Happy New Year). |
