CHICAGO—In a country where a loaf of bread or
a bag of rice is not within the budget for most, and
where more than 65 percent live below the poverty line,
countless Zimbabweans were looking for a positive outcome
from the March 29th presidential elections. After more
than a month of delays, the results have been announced,
leaving people with more questions than answers. A
run-off (second round) has been declared by election
officials.
While there is still no clear indication of who will lead the country, Bible
League staff in Zimbabwe, churches, and other ministry partners continue to pray
for the political situation—working diligently to provide comfort and hope
with God’s Word.
In the days immediately following the elections things appeared to be peaceful
throughout the country. “There is no disturbance whatsoever at this time.
This is a miracle considering that there have been some delays in announcing
the official results, causing speculation,” said a Bible League ministry
contact in Zimbabwe. “There remains freedom of worship, which we value
so much, and there is respect for human life. Business is going on as usual.
Our ministry is going on well with no hitches.”
Now more than a month later, tensions are high. While government officials have
denied the reports, some of Zimbabwe’s religious leaders have reported
heightened acts of violence against supporters of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
“With the current political, economic, and social chaos, it’s evident
that God’s Word is still desperately needed in Zimbabwe,” says Bible
League’s vice president of Africa and Eurasia ministries. “While
many are looking for change to come through a new political leader, it’s
only through God’s Word that the transformation of hearts and the actions
of people can be realized.”
In 2007, Bible League-trained Christians shared 61,730
Bibles and New Testaments with people in Zimbabwe, 1,850
Bible study groups were formed, and 219 churches were
established. |
