Friday May 17. Greetings from Mexico City! I am here with Paul Richardson, my friend from Bible League Canada, to meet some new believers who have come to faith through Bible League International’s ministry in and around this bustling city.
Our first stop was in Cuernavaca, just south of Mexico City, where church planters are working to share the hope of the Gospel. So many people in this poor community face a lot of issues with drugs and violence in their neighborhoods.
This is where Paul and I met with a grandmother, her daughter-in-law, and her two grandchildren. It was such an honor to meet these beautiful people—and we felt humbled to hear their stories. So many people in Mexico are living their lives without knowing the hope that is found in Jesus Christ. So many are suffering from broken families, poverty, crime, and sexual violence. I had tears in my eyes as these women shared their testimonies.
Both these ladies went through Project Philip Bible studies and gave their lives to Christ in the process. Praise God that they now know that He is with them. They found peace with Him and now have hope even though their lives have not become easier. We certainly saw their true joy and thankfulness.
The grandmother has six children with her husband, a distant and troubled man who paid little attention to his family. He sought refuge in alcohol and other means, which often led to his violent behavior towards his wife. When one of her children died when he was only a year old, she had to go through that process alone because her husband was absent. With tears in her eyes, she shared about her lost baby but also about the blessing of her other children.
One day she was invited to go to church—and she went without her husband’s permission. Through the church, she become part of a Project Philip Bible study, and was transformed. Christ came into her life! As she grew in faith, she sometimes took her children to church. Now, two of her surviving five children are believers. A daughter is close to being baptized but is still struggling with alcohol. Two sons are following in their father’s footsteps. They still see their mother but have no interest in the Gospel.
Though her heart aches, this grandmother is a joyful lady who has a beautiful relationship with Jesus. Praise God that she invited the wife of one of her sons to a Project Philip Bible study. Her daughter-in-law is 22 years old and has a 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son. She and her husband both are believers today.
This young woman’s life has not been easy. When she was still just a girl, she struggled with bad relationships and depression and found herself drawn into prostitution. Her testimony hit us hard. Only Jesus can truly understand how much this young lady suffered from sin. By the power of the Holy Spirit working through God’s Word, this young mom became a Jesus-follower, was baptized, and now is part of the worship team in her church. She told us how she wants to grow in faith and worship and share Christ with others.
We prayed for them, thanking God for His saving love. We prayed for the other children. And we asked God’s Spirit to lead this family to be powerful witnesses to all they meet.
