Rest for Her Soul
Teen in Bangladesh touched by the Gospel
April 27, 2020
Today, more than 100,000 people—most of them women—work in tea gardens in Bangladesh. Shilpy’s mother is one of those women working hard to pick leaves in the garden. For many, it’s a family business. Teens like Shilpy begin working there at a young age, helping their parents, then become permanent workers as they grow older. The days are long, lasting from sunrise to sunset. Yet, they make less than $1 a day. Though the garden owners have the responsibility of providing housing, water, and other necessities, they often do not give proper living conditions.
Shilpy lives with her parents and two sisters in the tea garden. Her father has been sick for a long time and unable to work. She notes, “Our employer is not always kind to us. I sometimes help my mother in the field.”
It’s a difficult place for the mother and daughter. Shilpy shares sadly, “Most of the workers in the tea gardens are women. We do not have sanitation facilities. My mother and I accompany each other whenever we go out, for our own safety.”
Though each day is still hard for the family, Shilpy recently found a new hope after a Bible League-trained church planter visited her family. While there, the church planter shared the Gospel and prayed for Shilpy’s ill father.
The teen was interested in what he had to say and wanted to hear more. A few days later, she met with the church planter. Since then she has been attending a Project Philip Bible study. She was touched by what Jesus said in Matthew 11:29 NLT, “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Shilpy explains, “I understood that Jesus can give rest to my soul. I was struggling emotionally, and I wanted to tell my grief and pain to someone. I accepted Jesus without any hesitation. I feel that I got something new in my life.” The family had many idols in their home so Shilpy discarded them. Now, they only pray to Jesus. Her mother has also become a believer.
