Sapna comes from a remote village in central India. Unlike many around her, Sapna has been able to further her education. She is currently working toward her Bachelor of Arts through a three-year university program. But she knows that this is not the norm for her village.
She explains, “I am very proud that I could study for my B.A. The village that I live in is very poor, and most of the people here are illiterate. Many of them have not been to school.”
Sapna describes how a lot of the men are addicted to alcohol and how many children follow their parents’ bad habits. “The plight of the people in my village troubled my heart,” she notes. I wanted to help them and make a difference in their lives, but I didn’t know how to do it.”
When she told her pastor about how she longed to help people in her community, he asked Sapna if she wanted to learn how to teach Bible-based Literacy classes. She excitedly agreed and finished the training. At first, she had 10 students in her class, which was able to keep meeting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, some more neighbors joined, so now she has two classes of 10 people.
Sapna says, “I’m happy to see the impact of the program on the lives of the people. They are taking part in the class despite the many challenges. We maintain a safe distance and try to educate the villagers who are ignorant and careless about taking necessary precautions.”
